What is egg donation?

Egg donation, as its name implies, is a practice with which, through egg donation, a woman or a man with fertility problems or lack thereof can have children through in vitro fertilization.

However, not all women who wish to donate can do so, there are a series of requirements and medical examinations required by law for this practice to be carried out.

How many eggs does a woman have?

Women are born with their eggs counted, when they are in their mother's womb they have around seven million eggs, of which once you are born they will only have two million, before their first menstruation they will lose around 11,000 eggs every month. From this moment on they will possess between 300,000 and 500,000 eggs, of which 1,000 will die each month.

Egg donation seeks to take advantage of those eggs that are lost in each menstrual cycle, to help women or men who do not have them.

Requirements to be an egg donor

If a woman wishes to be an egg donor, she must take into account factors such as age, ovarian reserve, among others.

• Biological clock:

This must be between 18 to less than 30 years of age, since during this time the biological age of the woman is at its best.

• Ovarian reserve:

Have a good ovarian reserve, that is, the quantity and quality of oocytes that a woman has.

• Psychological tests:

The prospective donor must undergo a series of psychological tests that allow to rule out any type of behavior or mental illness that may be transmitted to the baby.

• Laboratory exams:

Laboratory tests are performed in order to rule out that the donor has any type of congenital or sexually transmitted disease that can be inherited in the baby.

• Genetic tests:

The future donor should be seen by a geneticist to rule out any disease or genetic condition that would rule it out of egg donation.

Selection of the egg donor:

• When the woman arrives at Celagem with the intention of being a donor, an egg donation coordinator from the clinic explains to the donor candidate what the treatment consists of, the advantages it has and the possible risks, provided that she has all the necessary information.
• Next, the future donor's medical history is opened and she signs the informed consents by means of which she indicates her desire and commitment to be an egg donor and to begin with all the medical examinations.

Once the woman has passed all the tests successfully and is eligible for donation, she can enter a database to start a process of ovarian stimulation and finally the follicular puncture.

Ovarian stimulation:

This is a treatment that lasts between 10 to 12 days and consists of supplying the donor with a daily dose of follicle-stimulating hormones, which will allow a greater number of eggs to be obtained, it is difficult to determine exactly the number of eggs that can be extracted, but the usual thing is to obtain between 10 and 20 mature eggs when the extraction is carried out.

Follicular puncture:

In this step, the donor will undergo a very simple and outpatient surgical procedure in which, through follicular puncture, her eggs will be extracted. This intervention is completely painless, since it is performed by sedation with the supervision of an anesthesiologist and this only lasts 15

minutes.Finally, and once the eggs are obtained, the patient must rest for that day and can resume her normal life the next day .
