How can I be a surrogate mother in Colombia?

The Role of the Surrogate Mother

The basic role of a surrogate mother is to carry a pregnancy on behalf of a person or couple who are unable to do so themselves. She can be artificially inseminated, either with the intended father’s sperm or donor sperm (traditional surrogacy), or she may have an embryo implanted in her (gestational surrogacy).

In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate will be the genetic mother of the child. In gestational surrogacy, she has no genetic relationship with the child she carries.

The surrogate may be a friend or acquaintance of the person or couple intending to start a family, or she may be found through a website or similar platform specifically created to match prospective parents with surrogates. There are arguments on both sides regarding which situation is better.

Requirements to Be a Surrogate Mother

The motivations that lead women to become surrogate mothers range from altruistic to purely economic. Some women, whether they have a familial relationship with the people who want to become parents or not, choose to help fulfill their wish without expecting anything in return.

However, generally in surrogacy, the woman who offers her womb has an economic objective, although she also wishes to help others. When the surrogacy process begins, through the agencies responsible for organizing and supervising each step, prospective parents are given the opportunity to choose the candidate they consider most suitable.

In general, these surrogate candidates must meet some basic requirements, although these may vary depending on the chosen assisted reproduction medical center:

  • Be between 25 and 35 years old, which is the ideal age for pregnancy.
  • Be in good health, as confirmed by various physical examinations.
  • Pass a psychological evaluation to ensure the decision is made under an appropriate mental state.
  • Not use drugs or medications that could affect the fetus.
  • Not have any sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Have had at least one previous pregnancy without complications.
  • Have a family member or partner who supports their decision to be a surrogate mother.

To initiate a surrogacy, women must demonstrate that they are mentally and physically fit, and in some cases, pass a polygraph test if required by the couples. Then the treatment begins. At this stage of the process, eggs and sperm provided by the couple are fertilized to create an embryo, which is then placed in the surrogate’s uterus.

Afterward, a contract is signed, which may include life insurance, clothing, food, and a monthly stipend.

Becoming a Surrogate Mother

The role of a surrogate mother or gestational carrier is undoubtedly one of the most committed and heartfelt voluntary acts that a woman can undertake.

It is essential to understand the fundamental reason why her participation is impacting the infertile population. She must then undergo various tests and be within the average age range of 22-38 years, although this can vary by country.

She must also demonstrate emotional and physical stability that allows her to dedicate herself to the pregnancy and avoid consuming harmful foods for the child.

There is still some controversy surrounding the use of surrogate mothers to achieve parenthood. However, whether due to fertility issues or other reasons, surrogacy in Colombia is a valid option for achieving parenthood. At Celagem, they have extensive experience in helping find the surrogate mother who will fulfill the dreams of many individuals and couples.
